School Supply Drive

Fall is quickly approaching and so is our September community service event. Our club will be collecting school supplies in partnership with Women’s Initiative for Self Empowerment (WISE). WISE is helping put on a school supply drive this year for families in the Summit-University & Frogtown Neighborhoods in St. Paul, and they need our help in getting supplies! Last year they handed out 250 backpacks full of school supplies to needy families and they had plenty of families left empty handed.

As a Club, we’d like to collect as many donations of new school supplies as possible. Ideas include:

New Backpack
Package #2 Pencils (no mechanical pencils please)
Package Pens (blue or black ink)
Packages Wide Ruled Paper
Wide Rule Spiral Notebooks
Set of 24 Crayons
Set of Markers
Set of Colored Pencils
Rolls of Scotch Tape
Tube of White Glue
Glue Stick
Pair Scissors
Box of Kleenex
..and more!

All members are asked to bring your collected/purchased school supplies to either the August 10th or 12th meetings. You MUST have your supplies in by these dates because even though this is our September event, the backpacks need to be ready to go for the first day of school!

SME Has Heart – Start! Heart Walk

The first charitable event held at Target Field – the Start! Heart Walk – the premiere fundraising event for the American Heart Association, drew support from the largest corporations in town and also numerous community teams including SME Rotary! Alicia, Jeanette, Katie and Lindsey experienced the pre-walk events on Saturday, June 5 including a Mascot challenge, and heard stories from those facing cardiovascular disease. With thousands in attendance, the American Heart Association’s mission to raise awareness for cardiovascular disease was inspiring as we took to the streets of downtown in a light mist walking over a mile with others who too, have heart.

Club Charter Night

It’s official! We are now becoming an official part of Rotary International! The Club Charter Night will be held on Tuesday June 1st at the Hilton in Bloomington (off of 494 and American Blvd). Everyone is welcome, but you must RSVP! Follow the below link to RSVP on the evite!

Growth Games 2010 – Score Update

Last night’s meeting was a great one! I promised I would post an update of the member’s who have earned medals so far! Remember, the member with the most medals by April 1st wins the grand prize, and anyone with 3 medals or more will be entered in for further prize drawings!

Polar Plunge a Success!

The 2010 Polar Plunge was a success! Our team of 7 was able to raise more than $1,000 for Special Olympics MN! Way to go Team! Lindsey K did an amazing job organizing our team and motivating us to “jump” in! More pictures to come, but for now I thought I’d share my favourite team shot! Thanks to Lindsey K, Leah C, Alexis K, Chris H, Gordon B, and Molly M for making the event such a huge success! For those of you who could not attend this year, get ready and excited for next year!

Growth Games 2010

The SME Rotary Club unveiled this year’s motto which is “Growth & Development”. This includes growing and developing our members into strong and passionate Rotarians, growing and developing our Rotarians personal leadership skills, and finally growing and developing our club and reach our goal of 20 members!

In efforts to help us reach our goal and get all of our members to focus on recruitment and retention the club launched a member competition called the Growth Games 2010! Reflective of the upcoming Winter Olympics, members will receive medals for their efforts in recruitment.

Wrapping Up 2009!

I can’t believe that 2009 is coming to a close! It’s been a great year and an even better decade! I wanted to take a minute and just reflect before moving into a new year and new chapter for the South Metro Evenings Rotary Club!

Back in January 2009, myself and Michelle (previous member) began planning this new club from just an idea. We had the idea to bring young professionals in the Twin Cities together who were all passionate about giving back. We knew it would take time and we’d hit road bumps along the way, and even though we have definitely hit road bumps I personally think our successes and achievements out weight those rocky moments!

First, to the people who have committed as members, Thank you! You have exemplified passion for giving back, getting involved, and most importantly making the time to be a part of an organization that believes in “Service Above Self”. You all deserve many, many thanks as you’ve all taken time and made room for Rotary in your life!

Secondly, those who are new, get ready for amazing moments! The SME Rotary Club has been doing great things in the past few months and we have plans to continue to do that! I look forward to having you all apart of that journey!

Finally, remember that Rotary is about family and friends! The holiday season was a busy one, but I continue to encourage all of you to bring out your family and friends! To be successful we have to encourage a balance between work, family, and extra curricular activities like Rotary!

Moving into 2010 we’re going to focus on:
- Recruitment and hitting our 20 member goal!
- Service projects local and international!
- Member development and fellowship!

I look forward to 2010 and being a part of this great group with all of you!
